Artist Spotlight

The exterior wall of Lola’s Café on Main Street has a new, colourful and youthful look, courtesy of the Brighton Arts and Culture Council (BACC).

The BACC’s founder, Des Rodrigues, painted the scene, which features the library, the municipal centre and more.

“The mural was inspired by the question of ‘what does Brighton mean to you,’” said Rodrigues about the query posed to local elementary school students.

“They submitted drawings to us. I interpreted those and created this painting carrying their message in a casual, colourful, youthful style.”

He painted the piece on 11-inch-by-14-inch artist’s paper. The illustration was then blown up and transferred onto panels by Willow Printing in Brighton. “The wall on the building is corrugated metal, which would make it extremely difficult to paint on,” Rodrigues noted.

The Brighton resident was asked by Brighton council in 2022 to arrive at a design for the mural. It was approved and a grant from the municipality to the BACC was partially used to fund the cost, he noted.

While Rodrigues said he volunteered his time and provided the work, the mural is really “a gift from the BACC and the municipality to the residents of Brighton.”
